Root to Tip

This is a taster of a full curriculum resource designed to teach Garden to Table tamariki about the problem of food waste going to landfill and how they can take action to change people’s habits.

Every year, New Zealanders waste $3.2 billion on food.  Food in landfills contributes to 9% of New Zealand’s methane emissions.  Dealing with our rubbish has become a specialist industry, but there is so much we can all do to change these statistics.

Here at Garden to Table, we love helping tamariki explore real world problems and then arm them with ways to tackle these problems in a hopeful way.

Thanks to our Principal Partner Rabobank our tamariki are able to understand the problems around sending food waste to landfill by examining statistics from the Rabobank-KiwiHarvest New Zealand Food Waste Survey - 2023. They then explore a multitude of ways to take action in their schools and communities to help change behaviour.

As a taster, we share a few of these fun Garden to Table activities with you and your tamariki. Together, you can learn about eating seasonally and make a reminder to display on your fridge, plus save some potato skins from the compost bin and make some tasty, crunchy snacks.
