Kēmu — a game — mō te wiki o te reo Māori.

The kaupapa for te wiki o te reo Māori this year is Kia kaha te reo Māori! Let's make the Māori language strong!

One way we’ve been celebrating this kaupapa with our Garden to Table schools and kura this week is through creating some new kēmu (games) that tamariki can play to practise the kupu (words) we regularly use in the ki te māra (in the garden) and ki te kīhini (in the kitchen).

Here’s one for you to play at home. Karawhuia — give it a go!

Ki te māra — In the garden

Print out this page, or download and print out the PDF of the game, and cut out the cards.

The aim is to kōrero Māori, kaua e kōrero Pākehā — speak Māori, not English.

Hāparangitia ngā kupu Māori. Kaua e whakamā, kia kaha! Say Māori words out loud. Don’t be shy, give it a try!

Tohutohu — Instructions

  • Place the ngā kupu card with te reo Māori words somewhere where each player can see it.

  • One player turns two cards picture-side up and places them in the middle for each player to see.

  • The first player to correctly name the object that is on BOTH cards in te reo Māori wins the cards.

  • Play until all the cards are gone. The winner is the player with the most cards.

  • The quicker you learn te reo Māori kupu for each picture, the speedier you will be!

  • If your rohe/iwi uses different kupu, change the ngā kupu card to reflect your kupu.

  • This game can also be played as a simple game of Wharewhare (Bingo) but make sure to use the kupu Māori.

Kia māhorahora te reo Māori — be open, without restraint in your reo. Not just this week, but every week and every day!
