Garden to Table in Action - Meadowbank School

In 2009, the Garden to Table programme was launched in Aotearoa - and Meadowbank School was chosen as one of just three Auckland schools to pilot the programme.

13 years on, the Garden to Table programme continues to flourish - it has become a loved mainstay of the student’s time at Meadowbank, providing a platform for tamariki to grow, harvest, prepare and share great food.

In 2017, Tereza (from Tereza’s Choice) headed along to Meadowbank School, to see Garden to Table in action. Despite the chilliness of the morning, the children were brimming with excitement - with the garden team ready to harvest Jerusalem artichokes, that the kitchen team would later use to prepare a minestrone soup.

Have a look at the video for yourself here:

Last year, one of our volunteers headed along to Meadowbank School, to check in with the tamariki, and see what they had been up to in the kitchen and garden.

It’s certainly no surprise that the Garden to Table programme has become such an integral part of Meadowbank’s culture.

As soon as you step onto the school grounds, you’re surrounded by beautiful vegetable gardens, lovingly tended to by the students and their kaiako - teachers. Even during lunchtime, students can often be found watering the plants, collecting seeds, and visiting hens. The kitchen is vibrant and modern - the perfect place for tamariki to turn the plentiful supply of fruit, vegetables and herbs into delicious healthy dishes during Garden to Table sessions. Just outside the kitchen sits a woodfired pizza oven - something which the Year 5’s spent months planning, researching, and fundraising for.

We are so proud of Meadowbank School - and wish to extend our thanks to all those who make the programme what it is. We love seeing the positive impacts of the programme ripple out into the community - and know that it will continue to making a difference for generations to come.

Ngā mihi maioha to Julz Glover for visiting Meadowbank School to take the still images above.
