Tricks of the Trade
Nutrition Resource
Tricks of the Trade is about getting students to understand the food environment they are immersed in and take action for change - personally, in the classroom, school-wide, in the community and nationally.
It is about arming students with the facts about what is influencing the choices they are making about what they eat, and then empowering them to take charge of their nutrition and make changes to their environment so that their choice of kai is an informed choice.
This new series of nutrition resources unpacks the world of ultra-processed food, and the marketing and packaging tricks that manufacturers and supermarkets use to make us buy their products. There are four nutrition units for students in Years 5-8 including:
Food Packaging
Processed Food and Food Marketing
Healthy People, Healthy Planet
Social Media and Television Advertising
Enjoy this sample activity looking at packaging with your ākonga (students).
With support from the Ministry of Education, we aim to align all of these units to the new Health and PE curriculum when it has been published, and the units will be available on Tahurangi.
