Maramataka
Ngā Āhua o te Marama
We are excited to bring a new resource to our member schools -Maramataka: Ngā Āhua o te Marama
This is a deep examination of how schools and centres can explore Maramataka in their daily lives through Garden to Table. It is not just knowing and understanding Maramataka but beginning to live by the tikanga.
This resource is based around three themes - Te Marama, Te Rā and Tāwhirimātea, all beginning their exploration with a purākau. Te Marama explores the Moon, how the Moon moves and changes, beginning with the pūrākau of Rona and the Moon. Te Rā explores the passing of time, starting with the pūrākau of Māui capturing Tama-Nui-Te-Rā. The third section, based on the atua Tāwhirimātea is all about observation of te taiao, noticing and recording local changes.
The activities are accessible to learners of all ages. Our teachers and specialists are supported with suggestions for how to begin planning their Garden to Table programmes to align with the Maramataka.
Here is a sample activity for you to try with your ākonga.
