Celebrating our second annual Bake Sale with Westgold

What happens when you challenge tamariki to host their very own Bake Sale …. AND you ask them to honour fresh produce in all of their baked kai?

They’ll get creative in the kitchen, and blow you away with the innovative ways in which they incorporate fruit and vegetables (straight from the school garden) in their baking!

That’s exactly what happened at the second annual Garden to Table Bake Sale, supported by Westgold.

Garden to Table and Westgold believe great food and good times deserve to be shared. Together, we recently invited schools throughout Aotearoa to host their own Bake Sale, in an effort to raise funds for their Garden to Table programme.

But, in a Garden to Table twist on this classic fundraiser, we challenged schools to ‘hero’ fresh fruit and vegetables in their baking.

The participating schools blew us away, as they whipped up all sorts of delectable kai, from Suafa’i (Samoan Banana Tapioca Pudding), to Kawakawa biscuits and beetroot muffins.

A total of 51 schools participated in the Bake Sale and some even managed to raise over $1,000! This will help fill their pantries with essential staples and other much-needed items for their Garden to Table programmes.

But, the Bake Sale was so much more than a simple fundraiser … it also represented an opportunity for students to enrich their learning and develop their skills.

From planning and preparing, to pricing and promoting, tamariki were involved every step of the way and in doing so, they practiced leadership, and saw science, English, arts, and maths come to life in front of them!

Here at Garden to Table, we loved supporting schools nationwide to deliver their Bake Sales.

Our heartfelt appreciation goes out to Westgold for making it all possible! We couldn’t have done it without their incredible team. They also kindly supplied 10 blocks of deliciously rich and creamy Westgold Butter to each participating school to help inspire the students’ confidence and creativity.

Ngā mihi nui Westgold. Also, thank you to everyone else who supported their local school’s Bake Sale whether that was spreading the word, buying baking, or offering words of encouragement to the local tamariki.
