How to make a spice mix for Father’s Day.

Here’s a BBQ spice rub you can create from whatever seasonings you have in the cupboard — the perfect present for Father’s Day, especially during lockdown. Older children can use ratios to scale up the mix to fit their jar.

Decorate a used jar for a personalised touch!

Father’s Day BBQ spice rub

Base ingredients:

  • 1/4 teaspoon ground pepper

  • 1 teaspoon salt

  • Pinch of chilli flakes

  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano

  • 1 teaspoon dried thyme

  • 2 teaspoons smoked paprika

  • 1 teaspoon paprika

Additions or swaps:

  • Add onion or garlic powder, mustard powder, more chilli or cayenne, or some brown sugar to taste.

  • Swap the green herbs for marjoram or thyme.

  • Swap the salt for celery salt. Just don't add too much salt!

How to make it:

  1. Mix all of the spices together and then put into a clean jar or grinder.

  2. Make a label with a creative name for your rub and these instructions for using the mix:

Pat meat or meat alternative dry. Sprinkle all over with spice rub and use your hands to rub in. Leave for at least 15 minutes before grilling.
