Soil resources with Weleda

Soil is an invisible and misunderstood powerhouse – in fact, it’s the foundation of life on Earth.

But, because it is often unseen, it gets forgotten, and because so much of its magic is so small, it is hard to imagine the hustle and bustle of life underground.

Here at Garden to Table, we love teaching tamariki about the importance of soil.

Now, thanks to our partner Weleda, and as part of their Save Earth’s Skin soil awareness campaign, Garden to Table tamariki are set to discover soil in ways they never have before.

In 2022, with Weleda’s support, we provided Garden to Table schools with a resource that helps them discover the delicate balance of soil ecosystems.

Recently, Garden to Table schools also got a new curriculum resource to help their students:

  • Name and understand the geological components of soil

  • Explore the biology of soil, and explain how geology and biology work together so soil can thrive

  • Unpack how plants and soil interact with each other to create a thriving ecosystem

  • Discover how humans interact with soil and what we can do to protect this precious resource

It’s hard to care about something you can’t see, and it’s even harder to care about something you can’t understand. We hope this new resource will make soil more visible for tamariki, and highlight the magic of this underground ecosystem and its integral role in maintaining life on Earth.

To celebrate, we’re thrilled to share with you some free ‘taster’ resources for your family to enjoy at home.

These resources include hands-on activities that will help you and your tamariki learn all about soil animals, bacteria, and fungi. You’ll get to do your own research on soil living organisms, and then decide which is the biggest, longest, and cutest!

For over a century, Weleda, a certified B-Corp company, has been growing the plants used to make their iconic products using natural, soil-friendly methods. Their global Save Earth’s Skin campaign, which launched in 2022, aims to raise awareness that soil, just like our skin, is a living, breathing eco-system. Weleda’s environmental stewardship and protection is at the heart of everything they do. This is something that is also reflected in the Garden to Table programme – and we look forward to working together to ensure the next generation is equipped with knowledge about the importance of soil.

Ngā mihi nui, Weleda!
